The JazzMN Orchestra is pleased to feature Grammy award-winning artist Terence Blanchard as we open our 2016-17 concert season on October 1st at the Ordway Concert Hall. Also joining the season opener will be Twin Cities favorite, vocalist Connie Evingson. Blanchard brings a rich background from his New Orleans roots, to his hard bop performances with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, to his introspective movie scores for director Spike Lee. The new 900-seat Ordway Concert Hall provides an intimate setting where audiences can experience the live acoustic experience and the full range of power and beauty of the JazzMN Orchestra.

JazzMN audiences will quickly learn jazz is alive and well in the Twin Cities as we open the concert featuring all-star jazz students in the Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands and the Dakota Jazz Combo. The concert continues with the JazzMN Orchestra with guest artists R.W. Enoch, Alex Nester, and Elmer Demond from the LA Urban Renewal Project. Their creative meld of jazz, pop, and hip-hop is paving new paths for jazz and big band.

Minnesota native Maria Schneider has made her mark in the world as an internationally acclaimed jazz composer with twelve Grammy nominations and five Grammy awards. Her music has been described as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization.” As she spends a week with the JazzMN Orchestra, she plans to customize her compositions to feature the unique talents in the band.

JazzMN promotes excellence in the jazz art form through performances and educational experiences. Paramount to our mission is generating opportunities for high school musicians to enjoy the art form by learning alongside our professional artists in sponsored clinics and master classes. In order to cultivate these JazzMN efforts, we rely on funding from individual and corporate donors.
